In profound sadness, the staff of Veasley Funeral Home & Cremations, Inc. want to express our sincere condolences to the Moore family. John’s earthly temple is now resting in the care of Rowell-Parish Mortuary. Revelations 21:4 says, "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death; nor sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away." Be assured that in the days ahead you will surely gain strength from the memories of Mr. John Gurnest Moore.

John Gurnest Moore was a blessing from God on Thursday, June 12, 1952 to the late Ernest and Bernice (Hawkins) Moore in Cairo, Illinois. He was likewise called by God on Thursday, May 26, 2022 to take his eternal rest. John is also preceded in death by his brother: Barry Moore and his sister: Wilhelmina Moore-Plant.


John attended the Fort Smith Public Schools: Howard Elementary, Darby Junior and Northside High. He graduated from Northside High School and he also obtained a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. John retired from Whirlpool, Inc. (Ft. Smith) as Head of the Chemistry Department. He was a past Lodge Master of Widow Son Lodge Number 3 in Fort Smith, Arkansas.


John’s free time was filled with his passions. He was an avid motorcyclist. He rode his motorcycle from his early twenties until the last few years of his life. He rode his bike through every state in America. He also enjoyed playing chess and was very good. Many times, he would beat the computer. He liked playing chess games with other people in order to glean from their knowledge. This speaks to his desire of being a life-long learner.


He is survived by his daughter: Kya Moore; siblings: Stanley Moore, Vanessa Moore and Michael Moore; best friend: Barbara Dalke and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.


Memorial service will be held Thursday, June 2, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Paul United Methodist Church 4100 Grand Avenue Fort Smith, Arkansas 72904.


Visitation will be Saturday, June 4, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Rowell-Parish Mortuary Chapel 611 North 9th Street Fort Smith, Arkansas 72901.


Celebration of life service will be held Saturday June 4, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Rowell-Parish Mortuary Chapel.
