Mamie’s earthly temple is now resting in the care of Rowell-Parish Mortuary. Revelations 21:4 says "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death; nor sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away." Be assured that in the days ahead you will surely gain strength from the memories of Ms. Mamie "Tensie" Louise Douglas.

Mamie Louise (Norwood) Douglas “Tensie” was a blessing from God given to the late Alex and Hazel (Reed) Norwood on Wednesday, June 12, 1946 in Van Buren, Arkansas. She was also called by God to take her eternal rest on Friday, December 3, 2021 from Fort Smith, Arkansas. Mamie was the ninth of the eleven Norwood children. She was also preceded in death by her husband: Thomas “Tom” Douglas; a son: Jimmy Lee Douglas; her five brothers: Herbert Manager, Jimmy, Leroy, Larry and Nathaniel Norwood and four sisters: Ernestine Foster, Elizabeth Johnson, Amelia Fields and Mary Catherine Norwood.
Mamie grew up with her parents and siblings in the small area in Van Buren, Arkansas known as Picket Hill. She attended Douglas Elementary School in Van Buren. Later, she was transferred to Van Buren Junior High and she graduated from Van Buren High School with the Class of 1965. She was always excited about graduating with one of her best friends: Charley M. Douglas Pham (who later in life became one of her sister-in-law’s) and the other best friend: Rose Anna Miller.
Mamie accepted Christ at a very early age and was baptized at the Greater Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church (GPR) under the Pastoral leadership of the late Reverend Jordan. She was a member of the Chapple Choir. Over time, Pilgrim Rest was built in the Picket Hill area when she was a teenager. She continued her service as a choir member until her adulthood. She continued to serve and praise her Lord Jesus Christ at GPR until her health didn’t allow her to attend. She loved GPR church family and was a faithful member every Sunday.
Mamie worked at Van Buren Hospital as a Nurse’s Aid and Dietary Helper. She continued to follow her passion working as a dietician after transitioning from Van Buren Hospital to work as a cook with the St. Johns Head Start Center. She passionately worked with the program for about twenty years. After her time ended at St. Johns, she began working at Country Air Daycare as Head Cook for five years. She had much love and passion for cooking. To her family, she was known best for her home-made potato yeast rolls.
Mamie was a loyal, devoted and loving wife to Thomas “Tom” Douglas. She truly loved being a mother to their three children. She adored the visits from her grand and great-grandchildren. Spending time with them brought much joy to her heart and would put a big smile on her face. She also loved her siblings dearly and was always filled with enthusiasm when she spoke with each of them on a daily basis. She loved to laugh and always kept a positive outlook in life, even though her sickness. She enjoyed playing dominoes and card games at every opportunity. She thought she was the domino Queen. She also enjoyed traveling, especially with her daughter Hazel. She loved to drive, where she acquired the nickname “The Road Runner” by the late Mary Francis Willis. She loved her fashion and looking her best at all times. She was known for her fashionable bling bling sunglasses and cosmetic eyewear. She enjoyed showing love, bringing joy and warmth to all that she met and that same love was giving back to her.
Mamie will leave to carry on her legacy to her son: Jerry Don Douglas of Fort Smith, Arkansas; her daughter: Hazel (Marvin) Jeanetta Verser of North Little Rock, Arkansas; her ten grandchildren: Anita Middleton, Jabari (Chelsea) Douglas, Bryton Hutcheson, Michael Douglas, Brianna Douglas, Justin Douglas, Dominick Douglas, Ceyairra Flemons, Darrian Cole and Taquan Douglas; fourteen great-children: Jeiyden, MaCenzie, Ferrah, Benjamin, Jamar, Amira, Olivia, Traeh, Isaiah, Amarra, Easilon, Jazayah, Renesamae and Theori; a sister: Gracie Carey of Fort Smith, Arkansas; three god-children: Lyric Wilson, Noah Norwood and Zoe Norwood and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends that will forever love and treasure her legacy.
Visitation will be Friday, December 17, 2021 from 11 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Rowell-Parish Mortuary 611 North 9th Street Fort Smith, Arkansas 72901.
Celebration of life service will be held Saturday, December 18, 2021 at 1 p.m. at Greater Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church 35 South 22nd Street Fort Smith, Arkansas 72956.
Committal service and final resting place will be at the Crown Hill Cemetery Van Buren, Arkansas.
