In profound sadness, the staff of Veasley Funeral Home & Cremations, Inc. want to express our sincere condolences to the Howard Family. Elma's earthly temple is now resting in the care of Rowell-Parish Mortuary. Revelations 21:4 says, "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death; nor sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away." Be assured that in the days ahead you will surely gain strength from the memories of Elma Howard.

Mrs. Elma Howard was born on April 20, 1945, in Somerville, Tennessee to the late Charlie Winfrey and the late Maella Douglas.

 

She accepted Christ at the age of eight (8) and rededicated her life to Christ again in the early 90’s at Ninth Street Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Smith, Arkansas; where she was a member.

 

She graduated from Fayette County High School in 1963; and married Henry Howard in 1965 in Kansas City, Missouri.  They both moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas in 1969; and started a new life together.  She dedicated her life to family, God and her work.  She was a Christian woman who loved going to church, praising God and sharing His Word with others. She was employed at Dixie Cup for nearly forty (40) years.  Ms. Elma loved giving back to her community and helping others when needed.  In 1976 she was commended for her extraordinary service to the Faculty and Students at Howard Elementary School in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

 

She was a great Wife, Mother, Grandmother,  Aunt and Friend and she truly cherished, loved and valued her family.  Her family was “everything” to her.

 

Mrs. Elma was preceded in death by her parents, husband , two (2) sons: Reggie Winfrey and Anthony Howard and her only brother:  Morris Winfrey.

 

Mrs. Elma leaves to cherish her memories and celebrate her life, one (1) son: Ronie Winfrey of Kansas City, Missouri, one (1) granddaughter: Ondrea Howard of Fort Smith, Arkansas.; three (3) grandsons: Anthony Howard, Jr., Terence Powell and Antonio Howard; nine (9) great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

 

Visitation for family and friends will be Friday September 20, 2024, 10:00am to 4:30pm Rowell-Parish Morturary 611 North 9th St., Fort Smith, Arkansas 72901.


Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday September 21, 2024, 11:00am Ninth Street Missionary Baptist Church 1023 North 9th St., Fort Smith, Arkansas 72904.


Burial and final resting place: Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery 4211 State Line Road., Fort Smith, Arkansas 72916.
