Bernice W. Johnson, 93, of Fort Smith, Arkansas was born April 9, 1924 to Alberry and Maria West, in Coal Hill, Arkansas. Sister Bernice Johnson departed this life on May 14, 2017.

For most of us, it was our mother who first taught us to pray and helped us to understand the mysteries of our Christian Faith. We can help repay her for that gift by praying for the acceptance of her soul. A son or daughter looks back on memories of their mother, and hope that they can give their children what their mother gave to them. Their mother’s memory is always in their heart, she is never truly gone from their life. Remember in life’s passing is the truest form of love one can give, for a memory should never die and a love should live forever in the heart of another. Our prayer: “O God, who hast commanded us to honor our father and mother; in thy mercy bestow favor upon the soul of our mother. And make me to see her again in the joy of everlasting brightness. She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank Johnson of Ozark, Arkansas; two sons, David Frank Johnson and Magnus Conquest Johnson and two daughters, Joan Bernidette Good and Brenda Joyce Portis. Sister Bernice Johnson leaves to cherish her loving memory, two sons, Frank Johnson, III of Fort Smith, Arkansas and Hannibal B. Johnson of Tulsa, Oklahoma; two sisters, Doris Wilson of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Effie Fay West of Kansas City, Missouri; eight grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Public viewing will be held Friday, May 19, 2017 from 12:00noon to 6:00pm at the funeral home. Funeral service will be held Saturday, May 20, 2017, 11:00am at 9th Street Church of Christ, 1930 North 9th Street, Fort Smith, Arkansas 72904. Interment will be held Monday, May 22, 2017, 11:00am at the Fort Smith National Cemetery, 522 South 6th Street, Fort Smith, Arkansas, 72901.
